Robert Anthony Plant, CBE (born 20 August 194

is an English singer and songwriter best known as the vocalist and lyricist of the iconic rock band Led Zeppelin. He has also had a successful solo career. In 2007, Plant released Raising Sand, an album produced by T-Bone Burnett with American bluegrass soprano Alison Krauss, which won the 2009 Grammy Award for Album of the Year at the 51st Grammy Awards.
With a career spanning more than 40 years, Plant is regarded as one of the most significant singers in the history of rock music, and has influenced contemporaries and later singers such as Freddie Mercury and Axl Rose. In 2006, heavy metal magazine Hit Parader named Plant the "Greatest Metal Vocalist of All-Time". In 2009, Plant was voted "the greatest voice in rock" in a poll conducted by Planet Rock.In 2011, a Rolling Stone readers' pick placed Plant in first place of the magazine's "Best Lead Singers of All Time".

"I don't want to tour like a bunch of bored old men following the Rolling Stones around." Robert Plant stated in an interview regarding rumours of a reunion tour of Led Zeppelin.

With a career spanning more than 40 years, Plant is regarded as one of the most significant singers in the history of rock music. After the break-up of Led Zeppelin in 1980 he started a remarkable solo career.

From 2007-2008, Plant recorded and performed with bluegrass star Alison Krauss. A duet album, Raising Sand, was released in 2007. The album, recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles and produced by T-Bone Burnett, includes performances of lesser-known material from R&B, Blues, folk, and country songwriters including Mel Tillis, Townes Van Zandt, Gene Clark, Tom Waits, Doc Watson, Little Milton and The Everly Brothers.
Plant and Krauss began an extended tour of the US and Europe in April 2008, playing music from Raising Sand and other American roots music as well as reworked Led Zeppelin tunes. The backing band features T-Bone Burnett, Buddy Miller & Marc Ribot on guitars, Jay Bellerose on drums and Dennis Crouch on bass.

In July 2010, Robert Plant embarked on a tour in the United States with a new group called Band of Joy (reprising the name of his very first band in the 1960s). The group includes singer Patty Griffin, singer-guitarist Buddy Miller, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Darrell Scott, bassist-vocalist Byron House, and drummer-percussionist-vocalist Marco Giovino.

The libretto of this witty opera, written by Max Blonda, could easily be the script of a TV sit-com -- Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz from the 1950s or the husband and wife from the cartoon Family Guy in the current decade. A husband and wife come home from a party. The husband complains that married life lacks sparkle and that his wife's friend, whom he's just met, is more attractive. The wife takes revenge by dressing up in a glamorous gown -- actually not hers -- and proclaiming her right to conduct an "open marriage". [No this is NOT a satire of Newt Gingrich; the opera had its premiere in 1929.] The husband predictably becomes jealous and sloppily cajoling. But the a guest arrives, despite the hour, the "famous opera tenor" whom the wife had attracted at the party. the wife flirts with him while the husband grovels. Finally the Tenor is shooed away, the wife slips out of her gown and into her housewife dress and the couple proclaim their happiness together in their mundane routine marriage. But a last interruption, the return of the Tenor with the wife's 'fashionable' friend, allows for the sort of madcap mayhem of a Marx Brothers film sung in contrapuntal twelve-tone musical density.

It is only the music that distinguishes this theatrical event from a sit-com or at best a stage play by David Mamet. What was a biting satire of "modern manners" in 1929 Germany seems tame today, when even Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" is regarded as a "period piece". The music, by Arnold Schoenberg, is another matter altogether. It sounds as bold and original as it did at its premiere, the chief difference probably being that orchestra members and singers are less daunted by it and better trained to sing it as Schoenberg intended. Schoenberg had hoped it would be a bigger success than it was, that it would be produced often and everywhere, but that didn't happen. The vocal score was too challenging for singers and the orchestration too quirky for the orchestras of the era. The orchestra for this 2010 staging was that of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, with Eliahu Inbal conducting, and I can assure that they didn't muff a single note. The four characters -- husband Georg Nigl, wife Brigitte Geller, famous tenor Mathias Schulz, and friend Sonia Visentin -- sing their roles with complete musical authority. They also act their roles quite amusingly. It's a bit of good ol' cognitive dissonance to watch their corny antics and hear their ultra-intellectual tone rows.

The whole production is less that an hour in length, with a cast of just four singers plus a child who walks on to speak a few words; it's effectively a "chamber opera" in length but considerably larger in musical ambition, not a score you'll go home whistling, rather one that will absorb all the attention you can give it and then compel you to hear it again. For music of such complexity and intensity, the brevity of this opera is just right; you could take it as five hours of Verdi or Wagner concentrated and crystalized in one hour of Schoenberg.

Trama
In un campo di addestramento dei Marines, nella Carolina del Sud, diciassette giovani coscritti per la guerra del Vietnam vengono addestrati duramente. Il severissimo sergente istruttore Hartman tratta le reclute come animali allo scopo di trasformarli in perfetti strumenti di morte, obbligandoli ad amare visceralmente il proprio fucile secondo i dettami del credo del fuciliere e rivolgendosi a loro con insulti mortificanti e soprannomi ignobili. Tra le reclute spiccano il brillante Joker, aspirante giornalista di guerra che sembra ricevere minori manifestazioni di disprezzo da parte del sergente, l'intelligente Cowboy, che diventa ben presto amico di Joker, e il goffo e sovrappeso Palla di Lardo, il cui vero nome è Leonard Lawrence. Quest'ultimo diventa fin da subito il bersaglio preferito di Hartman: irritato per i suoi atteggiamenti puerili e per la sua incapacità nel seguire l'addestramento e la rigida disciplina militare, allo scopo di spronarlo, il sergente istruttore lo insulta e lo umilia più di tutti, spesso di fronte ai compagni.
A un certo punto Joker ha un dissidio su questioni religiose con Hartman, che, colpito dal coraggio dell'allievo (che definisce ignorante e senza Dio, ma con fegato), gli assegna il compito di seguire personalmente Palla di Lardo, con la speranza di migliorarne il rendimento. Nonostante ciò Hartman, esasperato dall'ultimo errore di Palla di Lardo (che, affamato, ha portato in camera dalla mensa una ciambella nonostante non sia permesso portare viveri nel dormitorio), decide che, per ogni inettitudine di Palla di Lardo, non punirà più solo lui ma tutti loro, in quanto li ritiene tutti responsabili di non aver motivato sufficientemente il compagno. Stanchi di scontare per lui le punizioni del sergente, tutti i commilitoni, con la complicità di Joker, praticano un codice rosso a Palla di Lardo.
Dopo questo avvenimento, il rendimento di Palla di Lardo migliora progressivamente diventando uno dei migliori cadetti, mostrando grandi capacità come cecchino, il quale sorprende le aspettative del sergente Hartman. Ma l'evento danneggia irreparabilmente la mente della giovane recluta. Un giorno Joker confessa a Cowboy di essere preoccupato per lo stato mentale di Palla di Lardo, che, pur essendo migliorato parecchio come militare, pare essere sprofondato in una evidente follia. Joker ha infatti notato che questi a volte parla con il suo fucile come fosse la sua ragazza; tutte le reclute avevano dovuto dare al loro fucile un nome da donna e trattare l'arma come il loro migliore amico, ma Leonard esagerava visibilmente.
La notte prima della partenza per il Vietnam Joker, mentre è di piantone notturno, scopre Palla di Lardo nascosto nei bagni della compagnia: questi gli sorride in modo folle e demoniaco imbracciando il suo M14 caricato con pallottole FMJ. Leonard, persa ormai ogni traccia di sanità mentale, urla a squarciagola il credo del fuciliere svegliando Hartman, che lo scopre e lo insulta per l'ultima volta, ricevendo in cambio uno sparo diretto al cuore che lo uccide. Un istante dopo Palla di Lardo, nonostante avesse trovato qualcosa che gli riuscisse bene (sparare come cecchino), si suicida con la stessa arma, sparandosi in bocca di fronte all'atterrito Joker.
Qualche mese dopo Joker è in Vietnam, impiegato come giornalista per la rivista militare Stars and Stripes dopo la fine dell'addestramento. Stanco della monotonia delle retrovie e frustrato per il fatto di non poter pubblicare articoli senza passare dalla censura del suo superiore, si fa spedire al fronte di Hu?. Assieme al fotografo Rafterman, bramoso di emozioni belliche, si unisce ad una squadra dove ritrova Cowboy e fa la conoscenza di altri giovani marines, tutti condizionati e trasformati dagli orrori della guerra.
Un giorno Cowboy e altri due compagni di plotone , Doc e Eightball vengono uccisi dai colpi di un cecchino nemico, il quale, a sua volta ferito a morte dai militari americani, si rivela essere una ragazzina vietnamita. Svanito ogni sentimento di vendetta per i compagni uccisi, con il solo desiderio di non farla soffrire, Joker le dà il colpo di grazia, facendo di lei la sua prima vittima e guadagnandosi il rispetto dagli altri Marines. I militari tornano indietro e, avanzando attraverso la città in fiamme, si mettono a cantare la Marcia di Topolino, una canzoncina per bambini, in un surreale e lugubre finale.

As soon as conductor Adam Fischer engages the warp engines and shifts the well known overture into hyperdrive, we know we're in for an exciting performance of Bedrich Smetana's masterpiece, The Bartered Bride. As soon as the wonderful Lucia Popp begins lamenting her impending arranged marriage to the son of the rich landowner Micha from the neighboring village, we know that this will also be a lyrical and emotionally satisfying performance. And as soon as we see the traditional stage sets and costumes, we know that we are witnessing a performance conceived and designed before today's European penchant for updating opera to some strange locale with minimal sets and costumes. This staging of The Bartered Bride is traditional and revels in it.

Filmed live at the Wiener Staatsoper in 1982, the appearance of the townsfolk, wearing their traditional Bohemian costumes, exhuberantly singing and dancing, serves to quickly draw us into the early 1870s and this engaging comedy of love nearly thwarted but ultimately triumphant. Smetana was a confirmed Wagnerian who bridled under the usual criticism of that breed: Wagnerians are great at your typical end-of-the-world conflagration, but they are about as funny as a slow tour of a sausage factory. Smetana set out to prove that he could do funny. The first few years following its 1871 premiere, now in its familiar three act version, were largely unsuccessful. The opera failed to find its audience. All that changed when the libretto was translated into German by Max Kalbeck. It became the basis for the subsequent wildly successful performances at the Theater an der Wien in 1893. It is that German translation that is used here for Otto Schenk's 1982 production.

The late Czech singer Lucia Popp stars as Marenka (Marie). A favorite ever since I first heard her in Klemperer's brilliant 1964 recording of Mozart's The Magic Flute, her ability to fully inhabit a role is in evidence here. Her singing is as lyrically lovely as ever. Siegfried Jerusalem is her beloved Hans. Heinz Zednik is Wenzel, the boy she is forced to marry. Karl Ridderbusch is Kezal, the disreputable town matchmaker. These three Wagnerian singers are a reminder of the roots of this opera and they are splendid. The entire cast is excellent. Superior casting coupled with traditional costumes and lovely set design, yields a positive result: we are pulled, unresisting, into the world of this opera, and we are saddened to leave it when it ends. That's the signature of an exemplary performance. The Orchester der Wiener Staatsoper play beautifully for conductor Adam Fischer. Total time of this DVD is 155 minutes. Sound is in PCM stereo and DTS 5.1, both sounding clear and full. The picture has been digitally remastered and is clear with no artifacts given its age. There are the usual DGG languages, menus and previews.

Trama
1858, da qualche parte nel Texas. Django, uno schiavo nero di proprietà dei fratelli Speck, viene rintracciato dal dottor King Schultz, un cacciatore di taglie originario della Germania e che fino a cinque anni prima lavorava come dentista. Schultz cerca di acquistare Django, ma i due mercanti di schiavi non si dimostrano propensi alla cessione e gli intimano di andarsene: ne segue uno scontro a fuoco, al termine del quale uno dei due fratelli viene ucciso, mentre l'altro viene costretto a cedere lo schiavo, firmando l'atto di vendita. Il dottore ha bisogno del suo aiuto per riconoscere i fratelli Brittle, dei fuorilegge che sta cercando, garantendo in cambio allo schiavo la libertà e una percentuale sulla taglia.
Durante il viaggio, culminato nell'uccisione dei tre fuorilegge, i due fanno amicizia e Schultz scopre che Django, una volta libero, vuole ritrovare la moglie Broomhilda, da cui è stato separato alla piantagione dove lavorava precedentemente. Il dottore, avendo notato nel compare anche un talento naturale con le armi da fuoco e affascinato dalla sua storia, che gli richiama alla mente la leggenda tedesca di Sigfrido, gli propone di fare coppia per l'inverno e di aiutarlo poi in primavera a trovare la moglie.
Con lo sciogliersi delle nevi Schultz scopre che Broomhilda è stata venduta al famigerato e crudele Calvin Candie, uno dei più ricchi latifondisti del Mississippi. Per avere la certezza che l'uomo venda loro la donna, elaborano un piano: si fingono due negrieri in cerca di lottatori mandingo. Schultz approfitta della visita a Candyland, la sontuosa residenza di Candie, per parlare con Broomhilda e metterla al corrente dei suoi piani. Durante la cena accettano di comprare un lottatore per l'esorbitante cifra di 12 000 dollari, promettendo di tornare con i documenti in cinque giorni, e Schultz utilizza l'occasione per proporsi di comprare subito anche Broomhilda per poche centinaia di dollari.
Nel frattempo Stephen, il capo della servitù, si è accorto che Django e Broomhilda si conoscono e avverte con discrezione il padrone, intuendo che l'acquisto del lottatore sia solo una farsa per acquistare la donna. Candie, adirato per essere stato ingannato, costringe Schultz a comprare Broomhilda per 12 000 dollari, minacciando di ucciderla qualora l'affare non venisse portato a termine. Il dottore firma l'atto di cessione, libera Broomhilda e, uscito dal personaggio di negriero, esprime il suo disprezzo verso Candie. Quest'ultimo, per umiliarlo ulteriormente, esige che Schultz gli stringa la mano per suggellare la vendita. Il dottore si rifiuta di stringere la mano ad una persona così spregevole, ma Candie insiste e Schultz, approfittando della situazione, lo uccide sparandogli nel petto; si scatena così un conflitto a fuoco durante il quale il dottore stesso muore e Django, dopo aver tentato di aprirsi la strada uccidendo a colpi di pistola diversi uomini di Candie (tra cui il suo braccio destro Butch Pooch), si vede costretto ad arrendersi, poiché Broomhilda è stata presa in ostaggio.
Per Django si prospetta la morte, quando Lara Lee, sorella di Calvin, approva il suggerimento di Stephen di mandare l'uomo ai lavori forzati nelle miniere di carbone della LeQuint Dickey Mining Company, dove avrebbe trovato la morte a causa delle disumane condizioni di lavoro. Durante il viaggio Django si libera grazie ad uno stratagemma ideato ai danni degli schiavisti che lo stavano portando alla miniera e, tornato a Candyland, uccide buona parte dei prezzolati agli ordini di Candie salvando poi Broomhilda dai suoi carcerieri. Per completare la sua vendetta, aspetta che la sorella di Candie e i suoi accoliti tornino dal funerale e li uccide, gambizzando Stephen e facendo esplodere l'intera villa con la dinamite. Infine, si allontana a cavallo con la moglie, finalmente entrambi liberi.
