The year is 872, and many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred. Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested. What is he? Saxon or Dane? On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.
Il giovane Uhtred di Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon), rimasto orfano a causa delle razzie dei vichinghi, viene rapito dagli assassini del padre che vedono in lui le potenzialità di un vero guerriero danese e lo crescono come uno di loro.
Ormai adulto, Ulthred è schiavo delle sue doppie origini in un mondo in preda al caos e dove la guerra non è mai finita. Questo contrasto con il suo vecchio mondo sarà massimo proprio quando, per vari motivi, tornerà ad esso e cercherà di stabilire nuovi legami con la sua vecchia gente. Ad aiutarlo nella sua impresa sarà l’amica e amante Brida (Emily Cox).
In questa seconda stagione proseguono le avventure di Uhtred e i suoi scontri con Re Alfred. Centrale sarà la contrapposizione tra la forte morale cristiana e lo spirito selvaggio dei normanni, incarnata da Uthred stesso. Il personaggio di Uthred, inoltre, si evolve nuovamente, passando da uomo dall’animo ribelle a fiero condottiero. Uthred, che ora è diventato un fiero condottiero, ben lontano dal ribelle della prima stagione, intraprende un lungo viaggio verso Nord per vendicare la morte del padre e riconquistare le sue terre...
Basata sulla serie best seller di romanzi “Le storie dei Re Sassoni” di Bernard Cornwell (pubblicati anche in Italia a partire dal 2006, con la casa editrice Longanesi), “The Last Kingdom” è una serie tv storica nata dalla coproduzione tra Netflix (che ha preso il posto di BBC America) e BBC Two. La seconda stagione prosegue la narrazione dei due libri successivi "The Lords of The North" e "Sword Song".
Questo historical drama combina personaggi realmente esistiti con eventi di pura finzione.
Nel cast anche: David Dawson (Re Alfred), Thure Lindhardt (Guthred), David Schofield (Abbot Eadred), Alexandre Willaume (Kjartan).
