When six-year-old Sophie is tragically orphaned guardianship is assigned to her estranged aunt Annabelle. The two move into a large, eerie, Victorian house where Sophie unearths a locked wooden box with a strange symbol drawn on it. Desperate to connect with her niece Annabelle pries the lock open revealing a beautiful music box. Each time the music box is wound and replayed it's surprisingly chilling melody plays slightly longer, captivating Sophie even more. When the music box begins affecting Sophie's behavior and health Annabelle seeks the aid of a child psychologist and clairvoyant who soon discover the music box is possessed by an evil spirit who seeks to haunt Sophie and destroy Annabelle. As the haunting intensifies time begins to run out and Annabelle finds herself racing against the music box's melody to defeat the spirit before the last note plays.

Sophie è una bambina di sei anni, ha perso entrambi i genitori in un incidente e da quel giorno non parla più. La sua tutela viene affidata alla zia Annabelle e insieme si trasferiscono in una grande e misteriosa casa. Qui Sophie trova una scatola di legno con uno strano simbolo disegnato sopra: dentro c'è un carillon posseduto da uno spirito malvagio. Annabelle si ritrova a correre contro il tempo per riuscire a liberare le loro vite dall'oscura presenza, prima che la melodia del carillon suoni l'ultima nota.

In Andrea Breth’s staging at Salzburg we meet the titular hero as early as during the orchestral introduction, slumped in a chair watching TV, showing an eternal railway filmed from an onrushing train, a scene that recurs at the beginning of the following acts. The ageing Onegin contemplating his unsuccessful journey through life? That he has himself to blame for his failure we know all too well already and Peter Mattei makes it even clearer through his uncommonly forbidding portrayal of the haughty snob. Whatever attracted Tatyana to him? Not until the last act does he realize his mistakes and as the magnificent actor he is Peter Mattei then reveals deeper feelings formerly hidden behind the arrogant façade. Since Anna Samuil’s matured Tatyana by then is Onegin’s equal, socially and mentally, their heated confrontation becomes a real high-spot that remains on one’s retina for a long time.

The action has been moved to fairly recent times and we encounter a rather decadent Russia, short on joy, short on warmth, rich on cynicism and heavy drinking. The festive polonaise is danced by a sole sloshed man whose sense of rhythm has long since deserted him. If this is the 1980s, as the booklet notes suggest, we are probably witnessing the disintegration of the Soviet society. But there are always risks when a director transports the action to another time and in this opera the central duel scene is totally out of place in (almost) present time – an anachronism if ever there was one. The outcome of that scene is still tragic and one can’t help feeling pity for poor Lensky who dies on a stage filled with water. The strangest thing of all is when Filipyevna, who has had a strongly dominant function throughout the first act, goes to sleep in a newly dug grave. One associates this in a vague way with Erda in Siegfried – but why?

It’s short on romance as well and Tatiana’s letter scene, well sung and well acted though it is, falls flat when she types the letter to Onegin. All in all there were several things that robbed this gloomy but beautiful score of some of its magic. It was however saved by wonderful lush playing from the Wiener Philharmoniker under an evidently inspired Daniel Barenboim. We also get good singing and acting from both principals and cameos. Of the latter Ryland Davies, in the 1970s and 1980s one of the finest lyric tenors around, now in his mid-sixties was a wonderful tragicomic Triquet with the voice still in fine fettle. Ferruccio Furlanetto was a classy Prince Gremin and Ekaterina Gubanova was no mean Olga. Impressive for his sensitive acting as well as fine lyric singing was Joseph Kaiser’s Lensky. A long scar on his cheek seemed to tell us that he probably had been involved in fights over similar matters before.

Anna Samuil was young and innocent looking and her letter scene, in spite of the typewriter, was deeply affecting and Peter Mattei is possibly the leading Onegin in the world today. He dominates the stage not only through his physical appearance but even more through his expressivity and, of course, the magic beauty of his voice. I saw him on TV a couple of years ago in a French production of this opera where he was just as good.

The experienced Brian Large supervised the video production expertly but there were a couple of places that the stage became messy, whether due to the direction or the camera work I can’t tell. The sound was splendid.

Not a production that I could buy wholeheartedly but the singing and acting was certainly on a very high level.

Stravagante, dinamico, ribelle e amante della musica e delle belle ragazze, viene costretto dalla madre ad andare a vivere a Bel Air
da sua zia Vivian per mettere la testa a posto. Inizialmente non è ben visto da alcuni membri della famiglia (Philip, Carlton e Hilary)
a causa del suo carattere sfacciato ma, nel giro di poco tempo, riuscirà a legare con tutti. Pur comportandosi in modo immaturo e
irresponsabile, Willy è molto sveglio, di buon cuore, disinvolto, e ha sempre la battuta pronta. Alcuni episodi dimostrano che ha anche
buone potenzialità scolastiche, ma lui è interessato solo a divertirsi e uscire con le ragazze. È stato abbandonato dal padre Lou quando
aveva cinque anni e dopo aver provato, invano, a riallacciare i rapporti, non vorrà avere più niente a che fare con lui.

È lo zio materno di Willy e padre di Hilary, Carlton, Ashley e Nicky. Inizialmente è avvocato, ma poi diventa giudice. Severo e autoritario,
nasconde un cuore d'oro. Inizialmente sopporta la presenza di Willy in casa sua per amore della moglie, ma poi inizierà a considerarlo uno dei
suoi figli. È un uomo molto alto e corpulento, e per quest'ultima cosa è spesso vittima delle battute di Willy.

Nelle prime puntate, è spesso infastidita da Willy, ma grazie al suo aiuto, troverà lavoro come annunciatrice del meteo in una rete televisiva, per
poi diventare la conduttrice di un talk show tutto suo. Avrà un discreto successo, ma solo grazie al suo bell'aspetto.

È il cugino di Willy della sua stessa età. È l'opposto di Willy in tutto, serio nello studio e molto attaccato alle regole ma ingenuo e imbranato
nella vita. Viene spesso preso in giro da Willy per il suo modo di fare, scarso successo con le ragazze e per la sua bassa statura, ma nonostante
tutta la rivalità, i due cugini diventeranno amici nel corso della serie. Molto spesso sembra che voglia bene a suo padre solo per i suoi soldi ed
è un fiero ruffiano. Ha un buffo modo di ballare, è un fan di Tom Jones e possiede una grande collezione dei Puffi, di cui è molto geloso.

- Ashley Banks, interpretata da Tatyana Ali, doppiata da Myriam Catania

È la cugina di Willy e sorella minore di Hilary e Carlton. Pur essendo più giovane, è molto più ragionevole e sensibile dei due fratelli maggiori.
È la prima ad affezionarsi a Willy che avrà molta influenza su di lei. Per questo Ashley diventerà un'adolescente ribelle che non sopporta di essere
trattata da tutti come una bambina. È un'ottima cantante.

- Nicholas "Nicky" Andrew Banks, interpretato da Ross Bagley, doppiato da Monica Bertolotti

È il cugino di Willy più piccolo che nasce verso la fine della terza serie. Nelle ultime due stagioni, è già un bambino di cinque anni.

- Geoffrey Butler, interpretato da Joseph Marcell, doppiato da Giorgio Lopez

È il maggiordomo inglese della famiglia Banks. È noto per il suo sarcasmo e le sue costanti battute pungenti sui componenti della famiglia. Verrà scelto
come padrino del piccolo Nicky e nell'ultima stagione scoprirà di avere un figlio, Frederick. Prima di diventare maggiordomo è stato un corridore olimpico.

in uno dei quartieri più "in" della città di Los Angeles, Bel Air. La loro vita cambierà di colpo: pigiama party a tutte le ore, belle ragazze,
musica a tutto volume alla domenica mattina. Willy riesce comunque con la sua simpatia a conquistare gli zii così diversi da lui.
