Il trovatore (The Troubadour) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, based on the play El Trovador (1836) by Antonio García Gutiérrez. Cammarano died in mid-1852 before completing the libretto. This gave the composer the opportunity to propose significant revisions, which were accomplished under his direction by the young librettist, Leone Emanuele Bardare, and they are seen largely in the expansion of the role of Leonora.

The opera was first performed at the Teatro Apollo, Rome, on 19 January 1853 where it "began a victorious march throughout the operatic world". Today it is given very frequently and is a staple of the standard operatic repertoire. It appears at number 17 on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America.

The opera's immensely popularity, with some 229 productions worldwide in the following three years, is illustrated by the fact that "in Naples, for example, where the opera in its first three years had eleven stagings in six theaters, the performances totaled 190".

It was first performed in Paris in Italian on 23 December 1854 by the Théâtre des Italiens at the Salle Ventadour. The cast included Lodovico Graziani as Manrico and Adelaide Borghi-Mamo as Azucena. A French version translated by E. Milien Pacini and called Le trouvère was first performed at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels on 20 May 1856 and at the Paris Opéra's Salle Le Peletier on 12 January 1857. The Emperor and Empress attended the latter performance.[5] Verdi made some changes to the score for the French premiere of Le trouvère including the addition of music for the ballet in Act 3 and several revisions focusing on the music of Azucena, including an extended version of the finale of Act 4, to accommodate the role's singer Borghi-Mamo. Some of these changes have even been used in modern performances in Italian.

Il trovatore was first performed in the US on 2 May 1855 at the recently-opened Academy of Music in New York while its UK premiere took place on 10 May 1855 at Covent Garden in London.[10]

Today, almost all performances use the Italian version, although in 2002 the French version, Le trouvère appeared as part of the Sarasota Opera's "Verdi Cycle" of all the composer's work, to be completed by 2013.

Trama

Gianni (Kim Rossi Stuart) è un giovane padre che ha abbandonato il figlio Paolo subito dopo la nascita. Il bambino (Andrea Rossi) è nato affetto da handicap, mentre la giovane compagna di Gianni è morta di parto. Quindici anni dopo l'uomo decide di fare la conoscenza del figlio: l'occasione è data da un viaggio per portare il ragazzo in una clinica di Berlino per seguire alcune terapie. Durante il soggiorno nella città tedesca, Gianni farà la conoscenza di Nicole (Charlotte Rampling), una donna matura con una figlia affetta da handicap, che gli farà capire la grandezza dell'impegno che lo attende. Anche grazie a Nicole, Gianni e Paolo impareranno a conoscersi a fondo e a confrontarsi, ma alla fine sarà Paolo a confortare il padre.

Berlino, 1929. Sono passati dieci anni dalla fine della Grande guerra e la Repubblica di Weimar è appena nata....

La capitale, la vera protagonista di Babylon Berlin, vive a pieno regime i Ruggenti Anni Venti, ma inizia a fare i conti con la nascita del nazionalsocialismo, digerisce a stento la presenza dei rivoluzionari russi fedeli a Lenin e resta falcidiata da piaghe come corruzione ed estrema povertà.

La storia di Babylon Berlin, è ispirata al romanzo Der nasse Fisch di Volker Kutscher e racconta le indagini di Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch), un ispettore di polizia reduce dalla prima guerra mondiale e affetto, manco a dirlo, da shock post traumatico.

Rath è in trasferta da Colonia e la sua missione è quella di risolvere un presunto caso di estorsione che ha come scenari il mondo della malavita e quello della pornografia.

Ma la sua sarà una vera e propria discesa negli inferi di una città sporca e corrotta. E la vita del protagonista di Babylon Berlin ne uscirà radicalmente cambiata.

L’antefatto che dà il via alla storia è un caso di presunta estorsione che presto si rivelerà ben più contorto di quanto possa apparire a prima vista. Gereon Rath, aiutato dalla dattilografa Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) e dal collega Bruno Wolter (Peter Kurth), scoprirà un sottobosco in cui corruzione, traffico illecito di armi e conflitti sociali sono la regola quotidiana.

Un mondo parallelo che metterà a dura prova la sua tenuta mentale e lo costringerà a vivere in bilico tra lealtà e giustizia e a combattere non solo i vizi della Berlino peccatrice, ma anche i suoi stessi demoni e un passato che non può essere dimenticato.

1990. L'imprenditore tessile Libero Grassi si trasferisce con la sua fabbrica, la SIGMA, in un quartiere di Palermo controllato dai famigliari di Francesco Madonia, boss di Resuttana che si trova rinchiuso all'Ucciardone. Dopo aver rifiutato con fermezza di pagare il pizzo al clan, riceve diverse minacce e viene ostacolato in ogni modo. Nonostante ciò Grassi non si ferma: denuncia pubblicamente le pressioni sul Giornale di Sicilia (10 gennaio 1991) e in tv da Michele Santoro a Samarcanda (11 aprile) dopo aver fatto arrestare i fratelli Avitabile, due estorsori del clan (19 marzo). Dopo il successo mediatico Grassi organizza un convegno ma su 2000 invitati si presentano pochissime persone tra cui qualche studente. La stessa Sicindustria gli volta le spalle e solo la Confesercenti palermitana lo sostiene. Rifiutata la scorta personale, la mattina del 29 agosto mentre si reca a piedi al lavoro "Salvino" Madonia, figlio del boss, lo uccide sotto casa con quattro colpi di pistola. Una grande folla prende parte al suo funerale e il figlio Davide sorprende tutti alzando le dita in segno di vittoria mentre porta la bara del padre. Nell'ottobre del 1993 vengono arrestati il killer Madonia e il suo complice Marco Favaloro che in seguito si pente e contribuisce alla ricostruzione dell'agguato.
