Trama:

Giappone, anni 2010. Admirers of Baroque opera in innovative stagings must be thankful to Dynamic for giving us this DVD from the 2006 Spoleto [Italy] Festival of Vivaldi's little-known Ercole su'l Termodonte. Whilst one is grateful for every opportunity to hear Baroque operas in committed, fluent performances, the now-standard fare of Händel operas wears rather thin, so it is especially gratifying to have this Vivaldi score given top-drawer treatment in this production by esteemed director/designer John Pascoe.

Musically, the production is in the hands of American conductor Alan Curtis, a renowned specialist in the operas of Händel and Vivaldi, several of which he has recorded with superb casts for Archiv/DGG and Virgin/EMI. More so here than in his major-label recordings Curtis has the distinct advantage of bringing a fresh approach to a score that is familiar neither to audiences nor to record buyers. This perhaps allows Curtis greater flexibility in bringing a personal 'stamp' to the score, and he achieves many fine effects. One aspect of performance in which Curtis rarely fails to impress is the pacing of secco recitatives, which here are characteristically shaped for maximum dramatic continuity. It could be argued that Vivaldi's secco recitatives are a bit overlong, but Curtis' guidance (coupled with the alert declamation of his cast) minimizes this concern. Arias are less successful: often one feels that tempi are just that indefinable fraction too slow or too fast, affecting the dramatic verisimilitude of a particular moment in the text or challenging the singers unnecessarily. Still, in a score as unfamiliar as this and without having access to a printed score (to say nothing of the autograph), there is nothing upon which to base these observations but one's own perceptions, and these differ among all listeners. Curtis paces a performance that builds naturally without forcing, and for this one must applaud his skill in this repertory as much as Vivaldi's skill as a composer for the theatre.

There is likewise much to enjoy among Curtis' cast. Young American tenor Zachary Stains (Tiridate on Curtis' award-winning Virgin/EMI recording of Händel's Radamisto) approaches the vocal hurdles of the title role with considerable finesse and proves a singer of both style and substance, producing superb diction throughout and scaling the heights of Ercole's arias with flair. He also brings off the physical aspect of his scantily-when-clad-at-all character with athletic grace and unperturbed dignity. Young American countertenor Randall Scotting is similarly impressive as Teseo (Vivaldi and his all-purpose libretto are little concerned with fidelity to mythology, incidentally), singing with assurance and generally warm tone. Also singing with great fluidity and attention to the text is mezzo-soprano Mary-Ellen Nesi, 'star' of mdg's series of Händel recordings (Oreste and Arianna in Creta, with Tamerlano due on American shelves in August 2007). Here as elsewhere, Nesi proves herself worthy of inclusion among the finest 'early music' mezzo-sopranos active today, alongside Banditelli, Bartoli (arguably), Larmore, Mingardo, and Prina. Alas, the same level of excellence does not persist among the higher-voiced female roles, with sopranos Laura Cherici and Marina Bartoli singing proficiently but struggling with coloratura and upward extensions. Luca Dordolo and Filippo Mineccia in secondary roles are capable but lack distinction.

Pascoe's production conjures a classical world with a decided phallic fixation with designs that manage to be both evocative of conventional mythology (to the extent that his characters look as one imagines that Greek mythological figures of this vintage would have looked) and strangely contemporary. The phallic imagery is intrusive in the sense that it demands attention throughout, but this emphasizes (without cheapening) the fact that the mythological entanglements among Hercules, Theseus, Admetus, Alcestis, and Hippolyta are essentially sexual struggles. This faithfully reproduces the twists of Vivaldi's score but also 'works' as theatre in a modern sense. Stylistically, nudity is used far more effectively than in several other operatic productions I have seen, the physical nudity in Pascoe's production emerging as a parallel to the emotional nudity displayed by the characters. Pascoe achieves tableaux that are visually and emotionally arresting, providing a superb 'frame' in which to introduce modern audiences to the skill with which Vivaldi depicted the personal tribulations of these cardboard figures of lore.

The [Hi-Def] picture and sound provided by Dynamic are uniformly excellent, giving one the impression during home viewing of having a prime seat in the stalls.

With only small reservations concerning the quality of the sopranos' performances and occasional misfires from Curtis, this is heartily recommended to all those who enjoy Baroque opera, Vivaldi in particular, or rare music being performed by a talented, diligent, and well-prepared cast.

Ann, George e il piccolo Georgie sono in cammino verso la loro seconda casa, dove passeranno le vacanze estive. I vicini di casa, Fred e Eva, sono già arrivati e si organizzano per vedersi tutti il giorno dopo per una partita di golf. Mentre suo marito e suo figlio sono al lago per sistemare la barca a vela messa recentemente a nuovo, Ann inizia a preparare la cena. All’improvviso si ritrova faccia a faccia con Peter, un ragazzo estremamente gentile, ospite dei vicini di casa, venuto a chiedere delle uova. Poco dopo arriva anche Paul, amico di Peter e come lui, ospite dei loro vicini. Trama :

Il film è ambientato agli inizi degli anni trenta. Grace, una giovane donna in fuga da alcuni gangster, arriva a Dogville dove, nonostante l'iniziale titubanza se accoglierla o meno, trova rifugio in cambio di piccoli lavoretti a servizio di ciascuno degli abitanti. Inizialmente rifiutati con pudore i suoi servigi, successivamente pare rintracciabile un equilibrio e Grace sembra trovarsi bene nel paesino, la donna sarà progressivamente vittima di ricatti, sfruttamenti e violenze di ogni genere, ed i piccoli lavoretti diventeranno sempre più uno stato di schiavitù, fino all'apposizione di una catena al collo dopo...

In recent years John Eliot Gardiner's name has been linked more than any other to a huge upsurge of interest in Monteverdi's extraordinary Vespers of 1610. Bewitched at his first hearing of the work as a child, he went on to conduct it as a Cambridge undergraduate. For that first performance of the then almost unheard-of Vespers, Gardiner formed The Monteverdi Choir, which today enjoys a considerable international reputation in the performance of a wide range of music. In all of their performances over the last twenty-five years the choir has been accompanied by The English Baroque Soloists, also founded by Gardiner (in 197. It is these forces, together with His Majesties Sagbutts and Cornetts and the London Oratory Junior Choir, which perform the Vespers in St. Mark's.

Trama
Ángela è una giornalista di una tv locale di Barcellona. Insieme al suo cameraman Pablo va in una caserma dei pompieri per mostrare come vivono i pompieri una nottata di servizi. La serata trascorre tranquilla finché non suona l'allarme, e tre pompieri con al seguito i due inviati si dirigono verso il palazzo dal quale è partita la chiamata. All'interno dello stabile trovano diverse persone nell'atrio: tra di loro due poliziotti, una madre con una bambina malata di tonsillite, un signore anziano, l'amministratore di condominio, una coppia anziana e una famiglia cinese composta da madre, padre, figlio e nonno. Sono stati chiamati assieme ai poliziotti a causa delle grida di un'anziana signora e decidono quindi di forzare la porta dell'abitazione.
Quando i pompieri e i due reporter entrano nell'appartamento, trovano l'anziana signora Conchita coperta di sangue che con un urlo si lancia su uno dei due poliziotti, mordendolo al collo. Scappando dall'appartamento, il gruppo porta il ferito nell'atrio dell'edificio e tutti si domandano cosa stia succedendo. Un veterinario che vive nell'edificio si prende cura del poliziotto ferito. Subito dopo l'altro pompiere viene buttato giù dalle scale dalla signora Conchita e rimane in condizioni gravi. L'edificio però viene bloccato dalle autorità che lo mettono in quarantena prima che chiunque possa uscire. Cercando di ristabilire la calma tra quelli che sono nell'atrio, il pompiere, il poliziotto e il cameraman ritornano nell'appartamento e si ritrovano a essere attaccati ancora dall'anziana, alla quale sparano tre colpi, facendola accasciare a terra.
La rabbia e la frustrazione aumentano quando scoprono che tutte le uscite e finestre sono state chiuse e l'unica risposta delle autorità è quella di aspettare un ufficiale sanitario e di non tentare in nessun modo di uscire dall'edificio. Sia i feriti sia gli inquilini si rifugiano in un laboratorio tessile al pianterreno. Ángela e Pablo decidono di intervistare i residenti del vecchio palazzo per raccontare i momenti prima dell'incidente.
L'ufficiale sanitario arriva e chiede di vedere i due feriti. Ángela e Pablo non vengono ammessi nella stanza ma trovano una piccola apertura in una delle finestre dalla quale sbirciano: vedono il poliziotto, il medico praticante e l'ufficiale che ammanettano il pompiere ferito e gli iniettano un misterioso siero nelle vene; subito dopo questi si rialza e attacca il medico che lo curava pochi istanti prima. Tutti scappano, lasciando il medico rinchiuso nello stanzino al suo destino e chiedono delle spiegazioni all'ufficiale medico. Il virus con cui hanno a che fare si manifesta come una semplice influenza, e, simile alla rabbia, viene trasmesso mediante la saliva, e fa sì che chi ne viene infettato, dopo pochi minuti di lucidità, comincia ad attaccare chi sta vicino per divorarlo.
La madre cerca di difendere la figlia, ma Jennifer riesce a liberarsi e corre via. La madre viene ammanettata per impedirle di seguire la figlia e il poliziotto, il pompiere e Pablo si affrettano a cercare di riprendere la bambina che si nasconde nell'appartamento della vecchia signora; entrati nell'appartamento, la bambina finisce per mordere il poliziotto che la blocca, lasciando scappare il resto del gruppo. Riescono a tornare giù ma vedono che gli infetti rinchiusi nel laboratorio stanno per liberarsi e la loro unica opzione è quella di abbandonare la donna ammanettata e, nel fuggi fuggi generale, riescono a rinchiudersi in uno degli appartamenti.
Riescono a mettersi al sicuro, ma l'ufficiale sanitario dice di essere stato morso e si rinchiude in uno sgabuzzino. Uno degli inquilini dice che c'è una possibilità di fuga: sotto il laboratorio di tessuti c'è un passaggio sotterraneo che conduce nei canali di scarico della città, ma per aprire la porta che dà a questo passaggio devono andare nell'appartamento dell'amministratore del condominio: lì c'è la chiave. Successivamente Pablo e Angela riescono ad arrivare all'appartamento riuscendo a trovare un mazzo di chiavi, ma uscendo dall'edificio, sporgendosi dalla ringhiera delle scale, notato che tutti gli inquilini sono stati infettati, compreso Manu che era rimasto fuori dall'appartamento per fronteggiare gli infetti, e ora stanno rapidamente salendo le scale per raggiungerli. L'unica salvezza è entrare nell'appartamento.

Sono trascorsi dieci anni dai fatti di sangue causati dalla caccia del Terminator alla madre di John Connor, Sarah. Sarah Connor è rinchiusa in un manicomio criminale da quando, dopo la nascita del figlio, ha tentato di far esplodere una fabbrica di computer e di armamenti militari destinati al progetto riguardante il supersistema informatico Skynet. Tutti la ritengono una pazza psicotica che minaccia continuamente di una fine del mondo che avverrà, secondo quanto narrato dal defunto Kyle Reese, il 29 agosto 1997. Il figlio di Sarah, John, è ora un ragazzo sbandato, in affido presso una famiglia di Los Angeles...
