Ercole Pappalardo, archivista capo di un Ministero, sposato con cinque figlie, si trascina in un'esistenza grama, tra preoccupazioni e ristrettezze economiche, confortato dalla speranza di una promozione. Ma una sera, mentre si trova nella galleria di un teatro, gli accade di fare uno starnuto formidabile e la fatalità vuole che l'abbondante secrezione vada a colpire il cranio del suo Direttore Generale, seduto in platea, facendolo uscire dai gangheri. Come se ciò non bastasse, il risentimento del superiore viene ancora acuito da un maledetto pappagallo, che allevato da Ercole, gli ripete le invettive imparate dal padrone. Per sbarazzarsi di lui, il Direttore, avendo scoperto che Ercole non ha la prescritta licenza elementare, l'obbliga a dare l'esame. Poiché viene bocciato, Ercole perde l'impiego. Disperato, decide di morire, con il proposito di apparire poi in sogno a sua moglie per indicarle cinque numeri che la facciano vincere al lotto. All'Olimpo è costretto a comperare i numeri alla borsa nera, ma sono veramente i numeri giusti e la sua famiglia diventa ricca. Arrestato per l'irregolarità commessa, Ercole viene portato al cospetto del Padreterno: ma quando apprende che è stato un impiegato statale, gli dice: "Allora, meriti il Paradiso!". Tutto questo però è solo un sogno...
Ercole Pappalardo, archival head of a ministry, married to five daughters, is dragged into a gullible existence, with concerns and economic constraints, comforted by the hope of a promotion. But one evening, while in the gallery of a theater, he happens to do a formidable sneeze and fatality wants the abundant secretion to hit the head of his General Manager sitting in the hall, making him out of the gangers. As if that was not enough, the resentment of the superior was still exacerbated by a damn parrot, raised by Hercules, repeating the invitations he learned from the master. To get rid of him, the Director, having discovered that Hercules did not have the prescribed elementary license, obliged him to take the exam. Since it is rejected, Hercules loses its use. Desperate, he decides to die, with the intention of appearing in his wife's dream to indicate five numbers that make her win the lot. Olympus is forced to buy numbers on the black bag, but they are really the right numbers and his family gets rich. Arrested for the irregularity committed, Ercole is brought to the presence of the Holy Father: but when he learns that he was a state employee, he says, "Well, merit the Paradise!".
