Trama:

Non è la prima volta che beve troppo. Questa però è diversa da tutte le altre: quando si risveglia infatti, Mike Hammer non è solo. Nella sua camera d'albergo c'è anche un ex compagno d'armi. Riverso a terra. Con un foro di pistola nel petto. E a quanto pare il proiettile è partito proprio dall'arma di Hammer.

Dopo la morte di suo padre Re Giorgio V (Michael Gambon) e l'abdicazione di suo fratello Edoardo VIII (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth), che soffre da tutta la vita di una forma debilitante di balbuzie, viene incoronato Re Giorgio VI d'Inghilterra. Con il suo paese sull'orlo della II Guerra Mondiale e disperatamente bisognoso di un leader, sua moglie, Elisabetta (Helena Bonham Carter), la futura Regina Madre, organizza al marito un incontro con l'eccentrico logopedista Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Dopo un inizio burrascoso, i due si mettono alla ricerca di un tipo di trattamento non ortodosso, finendo col creare un legame indissolubile.

Il prof. Cerullo, uno stravagante scienziato, ha denominato "tropelio" un specie di coleottero che lui ha scoperto essere presente ovunque esiste nel sottosuolo del "petrolio" (il nome convenzionale, infatti, è un anagramma). Naturalmente il mondo intero ha sete dell'oro nero e il Cerullo viene rapito. Da Napoli, ove è avvenuta la scomparsa, a causa dei pochi indizi raccolti partono per il Cairo il commissario Rizzo, detto "Piedone" e il suo fedele collaboratore, il maresciallo Caputo; i due, tuttavia, vengono seguiti anche dal piccolo Bodo, un negretto adottato da Piedone nel corso di precedenti missioni africane. Appena giunti nella capitale egiziana, i poliziotti napoletani devono prendere atto della diffidenza di Assan, capo di una tribù che vive nel deserto, e della aggressiva gelosia di altri europei, come Jack Connor, detto "Lo Svedese". Dalla loro parte, invece, si schiera l'industriale Edward Barnes la cui nipote Connie viene rapita. Neutralizzate avventurosamente tutte le aggressioni, fatta amicizia con Assan, al momento della battaglia decisiva Cerullo e Caputo possono contare sull'arrivo del tenente Kebir, fidanzato di Connie e comandante di un reparto di guardie egiziane alle quali vengono affidati i briganti.

Un agente di colore, proveniente dal Sud Africa per mettersi in contatto con il partenopeo commissario Rizzo a proposito di un traffico di diamanti e di droga, viene ucciso. Il poliziotto napoletano raggiunge immediatamente Johannesburg dove, assicuratasi la collaborazione del fido Cannavale (che ha lasciato la polizia ed è divenuto un cameriere in un ristorante), si trova costretto a fungere da padre al negretto zulù Bodo, di cinque anni, figlio dell'agente ucciso a Napoli. Rizzo, circuito dall'industriale Smollet e dal suo tirapiedi Spiras, inseguito dall'ubriacona Maggie, manda a vuoto sia i tentativi di corruzione sia gli attacchi dei briganti che temono la sua intrusione negli affari della "Rossing Diamonds". Inseguimenti e avventure diverse lo portano sin nel deserto di Namib e lo rendono inviso alla polizia locale. Ciò nonostante grazie anche alle astuzie del delizioso Bodo e alle ingenuità di Cannavale, il commissario riesce a individuare i colpevoli e a scoprire i loro sistemi per contrabbandare la merce nei sottofondi delle gabbie contenenti gli animali indirizzati agli zoo di tutto il mondo.

A color agent coming from South Africa to get in touch with the rogue commissioner Rizzo about a diamond and drug traffic is killed. The Neapolitan policeman immediately reaches Johannesburg, where he secured the co-operation of Fido Cannavale (who left the police and became a waiter in a restaurant), is forced to act as a father to Zulu Bond, a five-year old son of the agent Killed in Naples. Rizzo, an industrialist from Smollet and his Spiras wreckage, pursued by Maggie's dagger, sends out both bribery attempts and brigands' attacks fearing his intrusion into the Rossing Diamonds business. Different pursuits and adventures lead him to the Namib desert and make him invisible to the local police. Il capitano Mark della Squadra Speciale di Los Angeles sta per andare in ferie con la sua famiglia che attende con gioia il momento di partire per il campeggio. Ma proprio allora il suo superiore lo chiama per fare luce su alcuni furti e omicidi avvenuti in una zona della città. Così Mark si accinge, di mala voglia ma con la consueta vigoria e competenza, ad acciuffare il probabile ladro, che lui ben conosce. Si tratta infatti di un bellimbusto impomatato che passa le sue giornate tra dancing e sale da gioco, e cioè Tony Roma, noto anche per le sue continue fughe dalle mani della polizia. Questa volta però è Mark in persona ad occuparsene e non vede l'ora di acciuffarlo per poter partire per le vacanze. Ci si mette però di mezzo un noto capomafia che sotto la copertura di una fabbrica di statuette religiose e non, dirige tutti i traffici della zona, con l'aiuto di un certo numero di collaboratori. Tony Roma cade nelle sue mani e quando il capitano Mark riesce a riprenderlo, i banditi sono riusciti ad impossessarsi di tutta la famiglia di Mark. Questi però non cede e grazie all'abilità sua e a quella del suo fedele cane, riesce infine a liberare la famiglia, a riprendere il ladruncolo e a cominciare finalmente le vacanze.

Captain Mark of the Los Angeles Special Team is going to vacation with his family who is looking forward to the campsite. But right then his superior calls him to shed some light on some thefts and murders in a city area. So Mark is unwilling, with the slightest desire but with the usual vigor and competence, to catch the probable thief he knows well. La vicenda si svolge sul treno Palatino Roma-Parigi ove un Barone aiutato da un'aspirante attrice organizza il furto del carro valori, tenendo a bada il responsabile del vagone-letto e i diversi viaggiatori; tutto un campionario di varia umanità: l'uomo politico con la sua segretaria, lo psichiatra con una signora in cura, lo sposino e la sposina in viaggio di nozze, il cantante alla moda ..., l'erculeo assistente ... ecc. Il colpo riesce, ma i soldi sono male investiti in un film "kolossal" e l'impresa finisce in perdita. Allora il Barone tenta di rubare un enorme carico di valuta, imbarcato su un traghetto, ma un improvviso sciopero dei marittimi manda tutto in fumo. Da qui il progetto di impadronirsi di un carico di brillanti, imbarcati su un aereo, destinazione Amsterdam. L'impresa rimane allo stato di progetto, sperando che non diventi argomento di un altro film.

The story takes place on the Palatino-Roma-Paris train where a Baron helped by an aspiring actress organizes theft of the chariot values, holding the driver of the wagon-bed and the various travelers; All a sample of various humanities: the political man with his secretary, the psychiatrist with a lady in care, the bride and groom on the honeymoon, the fashionable singer ..., the erculeo assistant ... etc . In un'isola del sud d'Italia, nel 1948, il poeta cileno in esilio Pablo Neruda, si rifugia con la giovane e appassionata consorte Matilde. Al disoccupato Mario, figlio di un pescatore con scarsa vocazione per il mare, non par vero di accettare l'incarico di postino ausiliario dal locale capoufficio, Giorgio, comunista militante. Deve solo consegnare la nutrita corrispondenza del poeta, di cui inizia a leggere il "Canto general", e col quale a poco a poco, chiedendogli delucidazioni sulla sua "ars poetica", instaura un rapporto di amicizia. Il poeta riceve per il suo compleanno un messaggio registrato dal Cile e fa incidere sul dittafono un saluto per i suoi amici a Mario che come cosa più bella dell'isola cita Beatrice Russo, la giovane barista di cui si è invaghito e che riesce a conquistare con le "metafore" apprese dal poeta, che ha addirittura accompagnato il giovane all'osteria, dedicandogli pubblicamente una poesia. Beatrice, affascinata, nonostante il divieto della zia di rivederlo, si concede a Mario e alle nozze riparatrici Neruda fa da testimone, nonostante le perplessità del curato. Frattanto l'esilio viene revocato ed il poeta può ritornare in patria. Passano cinque anni e Mario segue le vicende dell'illustre amico sui cinegiornali, e alla radio, ma l'unico segno è la lettera del segretario del poeta che gli chiede i libri e gli oggetti lasciati sull'isola, dove, grazie al deputato della Democrazia Cristiana Di Cosimo, sono finalmente iniziati i lavori dell'acquedotto. Mario, che aspetta un figlio, registra per l'amico lontano i rumori dell'isola, la voce del mare e del vento, ed il battito cardiaco del nascituro. Ma dopo la vittoria della Democrazia Cristiana, i lavori vengono interrotti, e Mario è sempre più impegnato nel partito comunista. Cinque anni dopo, Neruda e la moglie entrano di nuovo nell'osteria di Beatrice, e vi trovano Pablito, il figlio di Mario. Ma quest'ultimo non lo ha nemmeno visto nascere: è morto a Roma durante un comizio in cui doveva leggere di una poesia in onore di Neruda.

Gatti gli si è affezionato ed ha, nonostante tutto, fiducia in lui; infatti Domingo, sotto l'apparenza di duro non è altri che un bambinone timido bisognoso di affetto. Veronica intanto ha fatto amicizia proprio con Orson, il capo della banda rivale del nostro ras; questi nuovi amici se ne servono per svaligiarle la casa; ma il rag. Gatti riesce a chiamare Domingo che, con l'aiuto di un Iena, ultima sua conoscenza, mette in fuga i ladri. Alla fine in un duello mozzafiato il nostro eroe riesce a sconfiggere l'odiato Orson; Veronica pentita torna dal padre pronto a perdonarla. Domingo per il suo interessamento alla faccenda riceve in dono dal rag. Gatti una splendida moto con la quale continuerà la sua vita vagabonda tra i suoi stravaganti amici.

E come se non bastasse, poche ore dopo, Luca si innamora di una esuberante coetanea conosciuta ad una festa, Claudia . 10 secondi dopo scopre che è fidanzata con un ragazzo con 20 Kg di muscoli più di lui. Luca però non si perde d'animo e comincia una spasmodica ricerca dell'amata. Di lei conosce solo il nome ma ignora la cosa più importante, che è la figlia dell'odiato professor Martinelli.

Nel villaggio poco si sa della guerra, ma un giorno i due ragazzi scoprono nel bosco due americani, un bianco e un negro, fuggiti da un campo tedesco di prigionieri. I fuggitivi vengono accolti nella casa di zio Tigna. Una sera, mentre tutti sono a cena, si sente bussare alla porta: è un soldato tedesco, l'unico che si trovi nel villaggio in qualità di telefonista militare. Si nascondono gli americani e si offre da bere al tedesco latore di un questionario del comando. Il tedesco si trova così bene che non vuole andarsene, continua a bere e s'ubriaca. Ma anche il negro, chiuso nella cantina, beve e s'ubriaca; finché i due si trovano faccia a faccia, e nell'ebbrezza fraternizzano, credendo che la guerra sia finita e facendolo credere a tutto il villaggio. Ma l'illusione dura poco. Il giorno dopo i paesani fuggono sui monti per sottrarsi ai temuti tedeschi; ma zio Tigna ritorna troppo presto e cade vittima degli ultimi nazisti, che fuggono incalzati dagli americani. Roberto Spaventa, un giovane pigro e inconcludente, viene convocato dalla zia centenaria, ricchissima, che gli comunica che lo nominerà suo erede, se riuscirà nei venti giorni mancanti al proprio compleanno a restaurare il Teatro Ducale di sua proprietà in Monteriano, per darvi in "prima assoluta" l'Amleto. Un autentico tour de force per Roberto, tanto che proprio in quel teatro lui ha assistito, venticinque anni prima, tra le quinte, durante una recita di bambini, ad un omicidio ad opera di uno fra i suoi compagni di scuola: da qui il trauma, mai rimosso. Le prove vengono continuamente disturbate perché si verificano omicidi inesplicabili, uno dopo l'altro, iniziando con la decapitazione di un operaio di scena. Roberto si improvvisa investigatore, aiutato nella disperata impresa dall'amico Pino che l'investigatore, anche se poco fortunato, lo fa di mestiere, da Tiziana, l'Ofelia di turno, e da Francesca, una giornalista, la quale per il suo giornale è sempre presente con interviste a tutti. Seconda vittima, trafitta tra le quinte, un falegname; indi Dora la segretaria-cassiera. le prove continuano ma anche gli attori sono pugnalati o avvelenati. Qualche sospetto aleggia su Otto, il compassato cameriere della zia bravissimo nel fare dispetti e trappole per tutti. La sera della "prima" lo spettacolo si svolge tra delitti e contrattempi e sovvertendo per forza l'ordine delle scene.
