- Mamma, chi è quel signore che dice sempre “stronzo”?
- Si chiama Lucio Dalla, e fa il cantautore atipico e il musicista che ama sperimentare.
- “Atipico” non so cosa voglia dire. Però dice sempre “stronzo”!
- Sì, ha anche chiamato così una sua canzone. E in un’altra parlava di gente che se ne metteva uno sulla fronte.
- Ma non è una bella parola, no?
- Non è nemmeno una gran bella cosa. Ma si vede lui ne è un appassionato.
- Dice anche “sono una merda sopra un prato”.
- E’ la spontaneità della poesia. Comunque quel testo non è suo. Anche se sembra.
- Dice anche “abbronzati un coglione”. Cosa vuol dire?
- Probabilmente allude alla superficialità della gente.
- Dice anche “Tu stai bene cagato così”.
- Non essere moralista. Pensa alle cose intense che dice.
- Dice “Depression, fuck you now”. E’ una cosa intensa?
- Non particolarmente. Ma Dalla è uno che parte sempre dal fango per arrivare alle stelle. E’ con questo approccio che ha scritto le sue cose migliori. E qualche bel passaggio, come in “What a beautiful day”, c’è anche in questo disco.
- A te piace questo disco, mamma?
- Non è un capolavoro, ma l’ho comprato perché in fondo mi piace Dalla, lo conosco da tanto e quando fa un disco nuovo è come quando un amico si fa sentire e ti racconta come sta e cosa fa. Un caro amico di un sacco di gente. Nella prima settimana di pubblicazione, ha venduto 200.000 copie.
- Allora è a voi che dice “Ciao”?
- No, penso che lo dica a questo secolo e a qualche speranza di noi che siamo cresciuti con lui. E’ un “ciao” che suona come un “addio”. Anzi, forse “A Dio”.
- Ma allora è un disco triste?

- In questo disco, mica tanto. Ma non è che i cantautori della sua generazione siano messi meglio di lui. Secondo me la canzone più bella del disco, quella con più sentimento, è “Ciao”. Figurati che conosco dei critici musicali che quando la sentono ridono.
- Ma se è un tuo amico, perché non gli dici di fare canzoni più belle? Credi non ne sia più capace?
- No, credo che sia ancora capace di qualche piccola grande cosa. Magari proverò a dirglielo. Anzi, a scriverglielo. E siccome è molto lontano, più forte glielo scriverò.

Sono trascorsi tre anni dalla Battaglia di Geonosis e la Repubblica Galattica ha subito gravi danni durante le Guerre dei Cloni contro i Separatisti. Infatti, il conte Dooku e il malvagio generale Grievous, il comandante cyborg dei droidi, sono riusciti a rapire il Cancelliere Supremo Palpatine e sfidano le forze della Repubblica sui cieli di Coruscant. Lo Jedi Anakin Skywalker e il suo maestro Obi-Wan Kenobi sono incaricati di salvarlo.
Penetrati nell'Invisible Hand, la nave ammiraglia dei Separatisti, i due Jedi raggiungono il prigioniero Palpatine, affrontando in duello il conte Dooku. Quest'ultimo riesce a mettere fuori gioco Obi-Wan e ad atterrare Anakin, il quale però, facendosi sopraffare dalla rabbia, riesce a riprendere il combattimento, tagliando le mani del conte e inaspettatamente, sotto gli incitamenti del Cancelliere, lo decapita a sangue freddo. Anakin, turbato, ammette che l'atto che ha appena compiuto non è degno di un Jedi, ma Palpatine lo giustifica facendogli notare come il conte fosse troppo pericoloso per essere lasciato in vita.

La serie si apre con il detective Harry Bosch e il suo partner, il detective Jerry Edgar che inseguono un sospettato. Quando Bosch gli intima di alzare le braccia, il sospettato con un gesto sconsiderato, lascia intendere a Bosch di essere in procinto di estrarre una pistola. Bosch così gli spara e lo uccide. Anche se autorizzata dal dipartimento, la famiglia del sospettato denuncia Bosch per omicidio colposo. Così Bosch si trova a dover affrontare un processo. Tuttavia contemporaneamente, continua il suo lavoro di detective, decidendo di lavorare su un caso in cui il cane di un medico in pensione riporta al suo padrone l'osso di un bambino ritrovato su una collina: dopo accurate ricerche, la polizia riesce a trovare tutto lo scheletro del bambino e riesce a risalire al nome di Arthur Delacroix, un ragazzino che si credeva fosse scappato di casa nel 1989. L'analisi delle ossa porta alla luce i gravi abusi che subiva il bambino, così per Bosch il primo sospettato risulta essere il padre del ragazzino. Durante le indagini, Bosch incontra l'agente Julia Brasher e comincia con lei un rapporto intimo. Nello scenario entra anche la figura di Raynard Waits , un uomo fermato dalla polizia per un controllo e successivamente accusato di omicidio dopo il ritrovamento di un cadavere nel suo furgone. Waits si addossa anche la colpa dell'omicidio del ragazzino sulla collina, in modo da poter uscire di galera e portare la polizia nel luogo dove si credeva avesse seppellito altre vittime. Durante una colluttazione nel trasporto, Waits scappa e miete altre vittime. Bosch riesce a risolvere entrambi i casi, ricucendo anche il rapporto con sua figlia Maddie, sacrificando il suo lavoro a causa dei giochi politici del capo della polizia Irvin Irving e del candidato procuratore distrettuale Richard 'Rick' O'Shea.

In una dimensione parallela contemporanea, il dispositivo tecnologico più in voga del momento è il cosiddetto synth, un avanzato androide dalle sembianze molto simili a quelle umane, ideato allo scopo di diventare un badante domestico per famiglie o un operaio per compiti più umili. Persone come George Millican, un anziano rimasto vedovo, lo usano non solo per essere aiutati nella vita quotidiana, ma anche come un dispositivo da compagnia, verso il quale può svilupparsi un legame affettivo. Nel Regno Unito una famiglia dei sobborghi, la famiglia Hawkins, ne compra uno ricondizionato, scoprendo presto che tale modello possiede capacità molto più avanzate di quelle pubblicizzate, comportandosi e pensando in modo simile ad un essere umano, con una propria volontà.
Il synth degli Hawkins non è l'unico esemplare con tale caratteristica, ma è membro di un ristretto gruppo di dispositivi che alcuni, come Leo, figlio del professore che ha ideato il codice in grado di far sviluppare una libera volontà ai robot, cercano di proteggere, mentre altri, in particolare l'ingegnere Edwin Hobb, cercano di neutralizzare profetizzando un'imminente singolarità tecnologica.
