After her mother is kidnapped, Clary must venture into the dark world of demon hunting.

Clary Fray è una ragazza perfettamente normale: studentessa alla Brooklyn Academy of Art, vive con la madre Jocelyn nel loro umile appartamento di New York e passa le sue giornate tra l'arte e il migliore amico Simon Lewis. Il giorno del suo diciottesimo compleanno, però, Clary passa la serata al Pandemonium Club, dove assiste a un omicidio che nessun altro - eccetto lei - riesce a vedere. Quando torna a casa, viene attaccata da un demone, ma il ragazzo che aveva visto poco prima al Club, Jace Wayland, la salva. Jace è uno Shadowhunter, metà umano e metà angelo che protegge i Mondani (persone appartenenti al mondo degli umani) dai demoni, e, quando si scopre che anche Clary è una di loro, Jace, insieme ai compagni cacciatori Isabelle e Alec, l'aiuta a scoprire se stessa. Clary deve comprende il prima possibile il potenziale che c'è in lei per poter sconfiggere Valentine Morgenstern, l'uomo più ricercato nel mondo degli Shadowhunter e dei Nascosti, che fino a poco tempo prima si credeva morto ma che ora vuole ottenere la Coppa Mortale, uno strumento che gli permetterà di creare nuovi Shadowhunters che lo aiuteranno a sterminare i Nascosti.

Nel 1980 Jack e Rebecca sono una coppia di giovani sposi la cui vita si complica inaspettatamente quando lei rimane incinta di tre gemelli. Il giorno del parto plurigemellare, nonché compleanno di Jack, le cose non vanno come sperato e uno dei bambini non sopravvive. Su proposta del dottore che ha gestito il parto, i due neo-genitori decidono tuttavia di adottare un bambino di colore nato nello stesso giorno e abbandonato da sconosciuti nei pressi di una vicina caserma dei vigili del fuoco, facendo in seguito ritorno a casa comunque con tre figli. Uno dei due gemelli, Kevin, è un noto attore televisivo che inizia a non essere pienamente soddisfatto della sua vita mondana andando alla ricerca di un cambiamento professionale e non solo; Kate è la sorella a cui è molto legato, la quale cerca invano di controllare il suo peso; Randall, marito e padre di due figlie, è il loro fratello adottivo che va alla ricerca del proprio padre naturale da cui era stato abbandonato. Quando lo trova, scoprirà che la madre, intanto risposatasi con l'ex migliore amico del marito dopo essere rimasta vedova, era a conoscenza della sua identità.

La trama segue sia le vicende dei tre fratelli nel presente che quelle dei genitori nel periodo in cui i tre sono nati e in vari momenti della loro crescita.

Olivia "Liv" Moore è una studentessa modello presso una facoltà universitaria di medicina, a Seattle. Un giorno, tuttavia, una festa alla quale stava partecipando è protagonista di un attacco zombie, e sia lei che altre sue amiche, dopo essere state morse, si vedono trasformate in morti viventi. Determinata a restare più umana possibile, cerca di continuare la sua vita di studentessa, mascherando il suo aspetto facendo credere di seguire uno stile goth. Per tenere a freno il suo appetito da zombie, inoltre, si fa assumere presso un centro di medicina legale, gestito dal dottor Ravi Chakrabarti, nel quale può accedere ai corpi di vari defunti la cui identità non è stata riconosciuta.

Cibandosi dei loro cervelli, inoltre, scopre di acquisire le loro memorie e le loro abilità, anche se solo fino a quando non si nutre di un nuovo corpo. Fingendosi una sensitiva, sfrutta quindi tale capacità per dare un nuovo senso alla sua condizione e aiutare il detective Clive Babineaux a risolvere i casi delle loro morti.

Washington, 1981. Philip ed Elizabeth Jennings sono due agenti segreti del KGB, membri del direttorato «S» che riunisce le spie russe attive sotto copertura, illegalmente, all'estero. Nati, cresciuti e addestrati nell'Unione Sovietica, quindici anni prima furono mandati in incognito negli Stati Uniti con l'ordine di spacciarsi per una giovane coppia di americani.

Nonostante il loro matrimonio, durante il quale hanno avuto due figli, fosse inizialmente solo una farsa, con il passare del tempo hanno iniziato a maturare reciprocamente dei sentimenti reali che vengono tuttavia messi alla prova sia dagli sviluppi della guerra fredda, con i loro superiori i quali pretendono interventi sempre più rischiosi pur di riuscire ad acquisire il maggior numero d'informazioni sul nemico, sia dal fatto che Philip, dopo tanti anni vissuti oltreoceano, inizia a sentirsi distante dagli ideali del comunismo, al contrario di Elizabeth ancora fervente sostenitrice della causa sovietica.

A complicare ulteriormente la copertura e i rispettivi rapporti c'è inoltre il fatto che i loro figli, Paige e Henry, ignari della vera identità dei genitori, stanno crescendo come due americani e pertanto vicini ai valori di quel capitalismo che invece la coppia è chiamata a combattere, nonché l'arrivo come nuovo vicino di casa di Stan Beeman, agente dell'FBI chiamato a indagare proprio sulle misteriore spie del direttorato
