Il professor Julius Kelp è un accademico universitario trasandato, introverso, imbranato, dai denti sporgenti che inventa un siero in grado di trasformarlo in un disinvolto, arrogante e odioso sciupafemmine chiamato Buddy Love. Questa nuova personalità gli infonde coraggio per proporsi a una delle sue studentesse, Stella Purdy, che all'inizio disprezza Buddy Love ma si sente poi inspiegabilmente attratta da lui. La formula del siero ha effetto nei momenti più inopportuni, mettendo Kelp in gravi situazioni di imbarazzo che lo costringono a ritornare in fretta e furia al suo laboratorio nella speranza che nessuno scopra il suo segreto.

Il mite Brad, impiegato presso un Network radiofonico, vive con la moglie Sara e i figli di lei, Dylan e Megan. Quand'ecco che alla porta si ripresenta Dusty, padre naturale dei bambini ed ex di Sara. Un tipo affascinante e avventuriero che con estrema facilità sembra riuscire meglio di Brad in tutto e per tutto, specialmente agli occhi di Sara e dei piccoli. Seppur dopo i primi momenti di scoraggiamento e dopo innumerevoli gag, Brad riuscirà, rimanendo se stesso ad affermare la sua conquistata posizione all'interno della famiglia diventando per giunta amico del rivale che alla fine si troverà nella sua stessa situazione.

I due vengono accolti a braccia aperte dalle rispettive mogli Joni (Jodi Balfour) e Ruth (Nikki Amuka-Bird) e, nel caso di Arthur, dai figli, ma il resto della società li considera due assassini a causa del loro coinvolgimento in una strage ai danni della popolazione civile vietnamita. Il clima, insomma, è molto teso.

Mentre Mac fatica a trovare un impiego, Arthur ha un lavoro che definire sfruttamento sarebbe riduttivo, e così si lascia tentare dalla proposta di un misterioso intermediario che si fa chiamare “Il Broker”. Lo stesso uomo che un paio di notti prima ha cercato di reclutare anche Mac, senza successo. In cosa consiste la proposta? Semplice: fare un sacco di soldi diventando killer su commissione.

Per aiutare Arthur, Mac rimane coinvolto suo malgrado in una rete di omicidi ed esecuzioni che si snoda lungo il corso del Mississipi, in un’infinita spirale di violenza da cui sembra impossibile uscire e che andrà a influire pesantemente su di lui e sul suo rapporto con Joni.
